If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition. And then admit that we just don’t want to do it.

— Stephen Colbert, December 2010

The problem with the Internet startup craze isn’t that too many people are starting companies; it’s that too many people aren’t sticking with it. That’s somewhat understandable, because there are many moments that are filled with despair and agony, when you have to fire people and cancel things and deal with very difficult situations. That’s when you find out who you are and what your values are.

— Steve Jobs, January 2000

Sometimes you need perspective. You’ve been right in front of greatness so often that you need to step back and see it again for the first time.

— Jay-Z, capturing Beyonce’s American Idol rehearsal on his cell. Dayum.

I think that I’m getting to that point where I’m starting to wonder what those other things I do are. And I’m really wanting to round it out a little bit. But then I also think ‘Isn’t this what unmeetable joy is like? Where you just do what you want all the time?’

— Justin Vernon in The Guardian. Justin is one of the warmest, gentlest, kindest persons I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting.

When I watch a bad football game live, I tend to unconsciously place the blame on the players and coaches; this is a misguided and childish reaction, but it’s a natural reaction. However, if I watch a bad football game three hours after it has finished, I can only blame myself.

— Chuck Klosterman on Space, Time and DVR Mechanics

If you’re going to work… work hard. That way, you’ll have something to show for it. The biggest waste is to do that thing you call work, but to interrupt it, compromise it, cheat it and still call it work.

The Path of an EF5 Tornado

It’s rather remarkable how clearly you can see the path this tornado took in tearing Joplin, Missouri—my hometown—nearly in two. The house I grew up (view large) in managed to miss the main path, so I have hope it still stands even though I’m sure it’s taken quite a beating.

Here’s how you can aid Joplin in their recovery efforts.

90% of everything we create, draw, or think of will be thrown away — by choice. That’s just as it should be. Only the best ideas can survive.

Listen to the opening track of David Bazan’s new album, Strange Negotiations, on NPR. Bazan has long been a hero of mine and continues to churn out tunes (and lyrics) that cut right through me. May 24th can’t come soon enough.

David Bazan, the brooding, gifted poet behind the now defunct band Pedro The Lion, has always been a seeker. He was a devout Christian for many years, battled alcoholism, became increasingly skeptical and eventually agnostic. Bazan’s loss of faith, and battle for sobriety, was a wrenching, deeply personal struggle he documented on his 2009 full-length solo debut Curse Your Branches.

For when the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks — not that you won or lost — but how you played the game.

Grantland Rice, 1941

I’ve never viewed myself as particularly talented. I’ve viewed myself as…slightly above average in talent. Where I excel is with a ridiculous, sickening work ethic. While the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guy’s eating, I’m working. While the other guy’s making love, I mean, I’m making love, too, but I’m working really hard at it!

Love these. Want these.

A bit of Americana brought back from San Francisco subway cars of the early 1900’s, featuring stops throughout the city.

I’ve always wanted to kick a duck up the ass.

— Karl Pilkington, when asked “If you knew with certainty that today was the end of the world, what would you do?”
